Craniomandibular dysfunctions (CMD)

An integral part

We are constantly using our jaw joint. When we chew and when we speak the jaws control and coordinate complicated movements. The jaw joint is also vitally important for our body’s balance.

One part of this system not working can lead to what we call functional disorders. The joint might not work properly in connection with the muscles and tendons or there might be something wrong with the joint itself. We call this a craniomandibular dysfunction (CMD). Our goal is to recognise these functional disorders in good time and to treat them.

Symptoms – hard to believe

The problems caused by CMD can be diverse: grinding, pains in the jaw joints, ear, head or backache, dizziness, migraine, tension in the shoulders, tinnitus, and hip and knee problems are only some of the symptoms that can be caused by a malocclusion. Yet this makes sense, because the chewing organ is one of our most complex systems.

A total of four million people in Germany suffer from a dysfunction of their jaw joints and its consequences.

Diagnosis - You’re in good hands

In order to diagnose dysfunctions in the chewing system, we carry out a holistic functional analysis. We use a special manual technique to examine the jaw joints and muscles for any anomalous symptoms such as pain in the muscles or the joint, or popping noises in the jaw joint when the mouth is opened. And these are only two of the many issues we address in our analysis.

Therapy - Joined forces

An orthodontist cannot treat craniomandibular dysfunctions alone. Treatment necessitates interdisciplinary cooperation of orthodontists, dentists, radiologists, orthopaedists, physiotherapists, osteopaths and speech therapists, or even orofacial myofunctional therapists. We are proud to be able to fall back on such a network of specially trained physicians.
For only with joined forces can we fully address the problem.

A simple solution

A biodynamic functional appliance made of plastic helps to bring the patient’s bite back to normal. This removable splint is worn mainly at night, when doing work requiring great concentration, or when engaging in sports. This helps to put even stress on the jaw muscles while at the same time protecting the teeth.

Not rocket science

The term Nociceptive Trigeminal Inhibition Tension Suppression System (NTI-tss) is simply a complex term for a custom-made splint preventing the patient from grinding his or her teeth at night. Muscle tension, headache, migraine and neck ache can thus be alleviated or even cured as the jaw muscles learn to relax again.
