Self help for problems with appliances

Loose bracket or band
Loose wire
Irritating archwire ends
Loose apparatus in palate area
Lost ligature wire
Pain
Sore patches
Inflamed gums
Headgear or face bow
Uncomfortable removable device
Braces no longer fit

Problems with fixed appliances

Loose bracket or band, no pain or sores

If a bracket or band (metal ring) has come unstuck from your tooth and is only attached to the archwire, please leave everything as it is. Call your orthodontist immediately and make an emergency appointment to have the parts re-cemented.

If the band (metal ring) has come off your tooth, clean the tooth with your toothbrush and then try pushing the band back onto the tooth. Then call your orthodontist immediately to make an emergency appointment. If a bracket or band has come off completely and is no longer attached to a wire, try to remove it carefully. Keep the part in a safe place and bring it to your next appointment. Make an emergency appointment.

Loose wire

Try to insert the wire back into the bracket or band with tweezers. If this doesn’t work, clip off the end of the wire behind the last bracket. If necessary, cover the end with a small piece of wax. And also make an emergency appointment with your orthodontist.

Irritating archwire ends

Use the back of spoon or the eraser end of a pencil and carefully, gently push the wire away from the irritated area. If this doesn’t work, cover the end with a small piece of orthodontic wax. If you have no wax left, try using sugar-free chewing gum. Call your orthodontist immediately and make an emergency appointment to have the archwire repaired.

PLEASE NOTE! We strongly advise against using wire cutters or other tools in your mouth! The wire ends could spring back and injure soft tissue.

Loose apparatus in palate area

If a band has come loose, try to push it back onto the tooth. The appliance should stop causing you discomfort. In addition, make an emergency appointment with your orthodontist. You should also make an emergency appointment if one of the locks has come unstuck from a band.

Lost ligature wire or elastic

Please inform your orthodontist at your next appointment.

Pain

If your multi-band device or other appliance has only just been fitted, you may experience some pain for a few days. If necessary, take a painkiller. If you notice no improvement, call your orthodontist to make an emergency appointment.

Sore patches

Rinsing your mouth with Kamillosan can help alleviate soreness. If you notice no improvement, call your orthodontist to make an emergency appointment.

Inflamed gums

Inflamed gums are normally the result of poor oral hygiene or dental care. Clean your teeth including your gums after every meal. If you notice no improvement, call your orthodontist or dentist for a check-up.

Headgear or face bow

If your headgear is causing you problems or is defective, stop wearing it, and make an emergency appointment with your orthodontist.

Problems with removable appliances

Uncomfortable removable device

If the device is pressing into your gums or causing discomfort, make an emergency appointment with your orthodontist.

Broken plastic plate or wires

If your removable braces or one of the wires breaks, please make an emergency appointment with your orthodontist, who can often repair a damaged, loose appliance. If one of the plastic edges is sharp, you can try filing it down with a nail file for temporary relief. If the braces still fit, and no sores develop when you wear them, please continue doing so until your emergency appointment.

Braces no longer fit or have been lost

There is a high risk that your teeth will move back to their old position. Please call your orthodontist immediately to make an emergency appointment.
